This chapter introduces the concept of query by tapping (QBT), in which the system tries to identify a song from the user's tapping or clapping on the beginning of music notes. We shall cover two aspects of QBT:
- Feature extraction: How to extract the onset time from recordings of tapping/clapping
- Comparison methods: How to compare the onsets with those of database songs in order to retrieve the intended song.
Potential applications of QBT includes
- Interactive toys/games.
- An aid for query by singing/humming, which uses pitch-based search.
- Personal identification/verification via tapping.
