Tutorial --- 5/11/98 Afternoon (3)

Conversational Systems: The Development of Spoken Dialog Interfaces.

by Salim Roukos

The next few years will see the emergence of conversational systems where computer systems will not only recognize what is said but will also understand the meaning of what is said. People will use natural language to interact with a computer system. This tutorial describes the various processing stages: from part-of-speech tagging, to parsing with semantic grammars and statistical parsers, to semantic interpretation covering context-dependency, discourse, and anaphora. We will explore dialog management for displayless and displayfull systems, and algorithms using rule-based systems, statistical decision trees and Maximum Entropy models. We will also demonstrate state-of-the-art systems.
