Low-Power Multimedia DSP Systems

by Keshab K. Parhi and Takao Nishitani

In a few years, multimedia will become part of everyone's daily life, implemented on single chips. This creates many challenges and opportunities. Reduction of power consumption is one of the major challenges in design of these systems. This tutorial addresses low-power design methodologies based on supply voltage reduction, transistor sizing, use of pass transistor logic, transformations, use of multiple voltages, clock distribution, and multi-threshold systems. The merits and drawbacks of recent MPUs with multimedia instruction set, embedded RISC with multimedia processing capability, media processors, and low-power DSPs will be discussed.
