Tutorial --- 5/11/98 Afternoon (1)

MPEG-4

by Karlheinz Brandenburg and Thomas Sikora

MPEG-4 is intended to become the future multimedia standard for the representation of audiovisual data. This includes natural audio and video as well as synthetic audio and visual data. Flexible composition mechanisms will enable interactive applications. This tutorial includes audio and video demonstrations that will cover the basic techniques involved in each part of MPEG-4. It describes how MPEG-4 differs from earlier standards for audio-visual coding like MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. While all parts of MPEG-4 will be covered, this tutorial will focus on the MPEG-4 audio and video coding standards.
